Obituary of Garry L. Sweet, Sr

LITTLE FALLS - Garry L. Sweet, Sr., 77 of 307 Dockey Road, Little Falls passed away Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Syracuse. He was born on May 6, 1932 in Stone Arabia, NY the son of the late Albert and Beatrice (VanDuesen) Sweet. He was educated in Stone Arabia Rural and Fort Plain High School. Mr. Sweet was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the US Army. He entered the service on August 18, 1950 in Albany. He served with Company "H" of the 39th Infantry Regiment. For his service he was awarded the Silver Star for heroism in action, as well as the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat in South Korea in April of 1951. As well as the receiving the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal and the Distinguished Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged as Private on September 3, 1953. On May 13, 1989 he was united marriage to the former Barbara J. Talbot at the Salem United Methodist Church, Stone Arabia, NY. He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post # 31, Little Falls as well as a member of the Mohawk Valley Post # 3275, VFW, Ft. Plain. Mr. Sweet was employed for 17 years as a welder for Con Rail, operating out of the Utica division. He is survived by his wife Barbara, 5 sons Garry L. Sweet, Jr. and his wife Julie, Ft. Plain, Leon Sweet and his wife Florence, Johnstown, William Pomeisl and his wife Ann, Sharon Springs, Kip Sweet and his wife Natalie, Pearland, TX and Stephen Sweet, Texas, 4 daughters Terry Ann Mussmacher, Stone Arabia, Karen Sweet, Ft. Plain, Tammy Sweet-Brown and her husband Johnnie, Texas and Melissa Roach and her husband Chuck, Hankamer, TX, 3 brothers Berneal Sweet and his wife Jean, Johnstown, Delbert Sweet and his wife Carol, Stone Arabia and Kevin Sweet and his wife Donna, Ft. Plain, a brother in law Richard Heiser, Canajoharie, 19 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Michael Pomeisl, his sister Jacenia Heiser and a grandson Timothy John Sweet. Graveside memorial services with Full Military Honors will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at 1:00 pm at the Evergreen Cemetery, Martin Road, Fonda, NY with the Rev. Alan Griffith, Pastor of the Fort Plain United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are by the Chapman-Moser Funeral Home, Inc., 42 N. Ann Street, Little Falls. There are no calling hours. It is the wish of the family that contributions in memory of Mr. Sweet be considered to the American Legion Post # 31, 100 W. Main St., Little Falls, NY 13365. Envelopes are also available at the funeral home for this purpose. The family would like to extended their sincere appreciation to the doctors and staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Syracuse for their care and compassion shown to Mr. Sweet and his family.
